From the Editor…

If there’s one thing we’re hearing consistently from job board leaders right now, it’s that change is accelerating.

AI is reshaping candidate behaviour, competition for attention is increasing, and many established business models are being challenged.

That’s why we’re looking forward to bringing the community together again on 8 October in London for the Job Boards Connect Annual Conference.

Lou and Louise at JBC Unplugged

Last year, 210 delegates from 27 countries joined us to share ideas, discuss challenges and learn from each other. This year’s agenda focuses on the topics we know matter most right now, from AI and candidate acquisition to business models and future investment priorities.

I hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter. And if you’re planning to join us in October, now’s a good time to get the date in your diary.

Indeed turns up the heat on free job postings

Indeed is accelerating its long‑running shift away from free job visibility, tightening caps and reducing organic reach for employers who previously relied on no‑cost listings. Recent policy changes have sharply limited free posts and pushed more roles into paid sponsorship, a move consistent with Indeed’s strategy to increase revenue per job.

Industry analyst the Job Board Doctor has criticised the trend as part of a broader “job slop” problem, arguing that platforms are prioritising monetisation over quality and transparency in job distribution. Employers dependent on free traffic are already reporting significant drops in applicant volume.

Are AI‑powered CV‑ranking systems about to become illegal in the EU?

EU Flag against grey sky

The European Union is moving to tighten regulation on AI‑driven CV‑ranking tools used by job boards, with new rules that could force companies to overhaul or abandon automated screening systems. Under the EU AI Act, CV‑ranking, candidate‑scoring and interview‑analysis tools fall into the high‑risk category, triggering strict requirements for transparency, documentation, human oversight and compliance by August 2026. Some features, such as emotion recognition or biometric categorisation, are already banned. Non‑EU companies recruiting into the EU are also covered, meaning global job boards may need to rapidly adapt their technology stacks or face penalties.

Chinese Espionage on LinkedIn and Job Sites?

two screens with code

NBC News is reporting that the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the U.K, and the U.S.) has issued an unprecedented joint warning that Chinese military intelligence is using LinkedIn, Indeed, Upwork and other job platforms to recruit unwitting sources.

According to the advisory, operatives pose as HR consultants or think‑tank researchers, posting fake analyst roles to identify individuals with access to sensitive political, military or economic information. Targets are then drawn into virtual interviews and asked to produce “trial reports” before being pushed for increasingly classified details, often with financial incentives. Officials say the campaign is aggressive, sophisticated and ongoing, urging potential targets to scrutinise unsolicited approaches.

The End of “Competitive Salary”: What the EU Pay Transparency Directive Means for Job Boards

The EU’s Pay Transparency Directive is about to reshape how job boards operate, forcing platforms to adapt to stricter rules on salary disclosure, data handling and employer accountability. With enforcement deadlines approaching, job boards must rethink how they collect, display and verify pay information, or risk falling out of compliance. The shift could redefine candidate expectations and employer behaviour across Europe.

“There’s Too Much Noise Right Now” – Key Takeaways From the Unplugged Closing Panel

Industry leaders at the Unplugged closing panel warned that job boards and recruitment tech vendors are battling unprecedented noise—AI hype, shifting buyer expectations and a crowded vendor landscape. Speakers urged platforms to focus on clarity, measurable value and genuine problem‑solving rather than chasing trends. Wage Growth and Inflation

UK real wages remain slightly above water but are eroding quickly as inflation outpaces pay growth, squeezing workers and dampening mobility.
