In our 14th Job Board Leaders Roundtable, on 11th September 2025, job board leaders dug into a deceptively simple question: should job boards put job seekers first—and what does that actually look like in practice? Spoiler: treating candidates like customers isn’t a nice-to-have; it’s a growth strategy.
“Without candidates, there is no business.” — roundtable contributor
What we discussed
Business model drives behaviour
Boards that monetise B2C (charging candidates) must deliver a great candidate experience; B2B boards (employer-paid) can drift into treating candidates as commodities. Either way, the consensus was clear: candidate experience now impacts employer ROI through conversion and brand perception.
“Easy Apply” vs. quality
Frictionless flows can backfire if they flood employers with weak applications and create “black-hole” experiences for job seekers. The group advocated easy + smart: hosted applies where possible, better screening, and clearer job data so candidates only apply to roles they can realistically win.
Salary transparency: help or harm?
Transparency generally lifts clicks and apply rates – but only when the numbers are credible. Some markets see understated ranges scare off qualified talent; others see inflated ranges erode trust. Practical takeaway: push for real data, label estimates, and explain ranges to protect candidate trust and employer results.
Close the loop (kill the black hole)
Auto acknowledgement and status updates remain shockingly rare. Where ATS data sharing is possible, one suggestion was to surface employer responsiveness so candidates know what to expect. Even simple “we received your application” emails materially improve sentiment.
UX is your moat
From search relevance to clean job pages and credible career content, small UX wins compound. Several leaders reported higher conversion when job pages showed the information candidates value most (compensation band, location clarity, application time, and what happens next).
Community still matters—when it serves outcomes
Community, events, and content work best when they increase qualified applies and employer ROI, not as standalone vanity plays. (This echoes last month’s theme: niche boards win by leaning into focus, credibility, and agility rather than fighting generalists head-on. )
4 practical ideas you can test now
- Apply quality guardrails: gentle prompts to tailor CVs or confirm minimum criteria before submission.
- Salary clarity: display verified ranges; clearly mark estimates; link to methodology.
- Hosted apply: reduce redirects and set expectations for next steps.
- Acknowledge every apply: if the employer won’t, you send the receipt on their behalf where feasible.
Why it matters
Candidate trust fuels repeat usage and qualified volume – the very metrics employers pay for. Prioritising candidates isn’t altruism; it’s how job boards win long-term.
