At our recent Job Boards Connect conference, Lee Biggins from CV Library remarked that the integration between Job Board and ATS was causing them their biggest pain point which inspired us to look further into how the disconnect affects applicants,

When job seekers click “Apply Now” on a job board, they’re often met with a jarring experience: redirection to an unfamiliar applicant tracking system (ATS), login requirements, duplicate data entry, and sometimes a broken link or expired posting. This disconnect between job boards and ATS platforms is more than just a minor frustration, it actively undermines the candidate experience and, ultimately, your ability to attract top talent.

The Broken Bridge Between Job Boards and ATS Platforms
Most job boards are designed for discovery. They showcase openings, offer filters and search tools, and generate traffic. But the moment an applicant clicks through to apply, they often land in a completely different ecosystem  – the employer’s ATS.

These platforms are built for internal HR workflows, not applicant convenience. The result? A fractured, inconsistent journey where the candidate has to start over. They’re asked to upload a résumé and fill in every field manually. They’re prompted to create new accounts for each company. Sometimes, the job they clicked on no longer exists.

Why This Hurts Candidates

  1. Duplicate Effort: Applicants often spend significant time tailoring their CV, only to re-enter every detail into the ATS. It’s demoralising and time-consuming.
  2. Drop-Offs: According to industry research, not redirecting to an ATS can increase completed applications by up to 50%. A confusing or clunky application process turns interest into frustration.
  3. Lack of Feedback: Candidates rarely hear back. And because they applied through a third-party job board, they don’t know if their application was even received, let alone reviewed.
  4. Poor Mobile Experience: Many ATS systems aren’t mobile-friendly. With a growing number of candidates applying from phones, this can completely cut off a significant applicant segment.

Why This Hurts Employers
While the applicant bears the brunt of the frustration, the impact reverberates back to employers:

  • Lower Application Completion Rates mean fewer qualified candidates in the pipeline.
  • Brand Damage occurs when job seekers associate a poor experience with your company, even if it’s the tech, not your team, causing the friction.
  • Wasted Spend: Employers pay for visibility on job boards, but if candidates drop off at the ATS stage, ROI plummets.

The Solution: Better Integration, Smarter Workflows
To solve this, we need tighter integration between job boards and ATS platforms. Some job boards now offer “direct apply” features, allowing candidates to submit applications without ever leaving the job board interface. These integrations sync with the employer’s ATS in the background, offering a smoother, more seamless experience.

Employers can also evaluate their ATS settings and workflows. Are they mobile-optimised? Can they enable autofill or remove unnecessary steps? Every improvement helps reduce drop-off and keep candidates engaged.

Job boards, on their end, have an opportunity to shift from just being traffic generators to being true partners in the hiring funnel, by owning more of the application flow and working with ATS vendors to ensure data flows cleanly and accurately.

We can’t afford to let clunky tech create barriers. The job board–ATS disconnect is fixable, but it requires collaboration, smarter integration, and a shared understanding that a seamless application journey isn’t optional.
